UAE Free Zone Guide

How to Set Up a Company in DMCC

What the premium buys, what it really costs, and who should pay it.

DMCC is the opposite of a budget free zone, and it does not pretend otherwise. Official setup packages run from around AED 31,936 to 43,780, and realistic first-year totals commonly land between AED 45,000 and 60,000. What the premium buys is specific: the strongest free zone brand in the UAE, a JLT Dubai address, the banking reputation, and the commodities and crypto ecosystems. This independent guide breaks down the real costs, and answers the question the official site never will: who should actually pay this, and who should take a cheaper zone instead.

What Is DMCC?

DMCC, the Dubai Multi Commodities Centre, is Dubai's flagship free zone, established in 2002 and headquartered in Jumeirah Lakes Towers (JLT), the business district it built and still operates. It began as exactly what the name says, the hub for Dubai's commodities trade (gold, diamonds, tea, coffee, metals), and grew into the UAE's most recognised general business free zone: more than 26,000 member companies from over 180 countries, and the Global Free Zone of the Year title from the Financial Times' fDi Intelligence for roughly a decade of consecutive years.

Two things distinguish DMCC from every zone covered elsewhere in this cluster. First, it is a physical business district, not a licensing counter: JLT's towers and the newer Uptown Dubai development are where member companies actually work, meet and bank. Second, it runs genuine industry ecosystems rather than activity lists: the commodities exchanges and trade infrastructure, and the DMCC Crypto Centre, one of the region's largest concentrations of crypto and web3 businesses, with its own DMCC crypto license framework and community.

The honest framing, which DMCC itself embraces: this is the premium product in the UAE free zone market. It is rarely the cheapest option for anything, and that is the point. The question this guide answers is whether the premium is worth it for your business specifically.

Package prices are DMCC's official published figures as at August 2026; all-in totals are corroborated independent reporting. DMCC pricing is highly configuration-dependent (activity, workspace, visas), so request a written, itemised quote through DMCC and confirm exactly what your package includes, workspace above all.

DMCC Cost Scenarios: What You'll Actually Pay

Package tables answer what it costs; these profiles answer what you will actually pay.

  • Solo consultant weighing prestige: an official package from ~AED 31,936, plus workspace if excluded, plus one visa government costs, lands realistically around AED 45,000 to 55,000 in year one. Read the Is DMCC Worth It section below before committing: for most solo service founders, it is not, and that is not a criticism of DMCC.
  • Trading or commodities business: the same all-in base, with the ecosystem doing real work: trade infrastructure, counterparties on site, and the banking reputation that matters most precisely for trading companies. This is DMCC's home profile.
  • Crypto and web3: the Crypto Centre package around AED 31,000 plus the standard stack. The regulatory comfort and the concentration of peers, service providers and events is the product; few alternatives in the region offer it at any price.

All scenarios exclude the share capital, which is refundable but must be available where required, and assume the itemised quote confirms workspace inclusion. Figures are 2026 reporting; confirm your configuration with DMCC.

Beyond the License Fee: The Costs That Follow

DMCC's extra lines are heavier than the affordable zones', and knowing them upfront is most of the budgeting battle. The structural ones: the share capital (typically around AED 50,000 or AED 10,000 per shareholder, refundable and usable, though the fixed requirement has been relaxed and proof of deposit is not always required), the mandatory JLT workspace (flexi-desk reported at AED 16,000 to 19,000 per year where your package does not include it), and the mandatory annual audit, which adds auditor fees to every year of the company's life. The recurring ones: per-visa government costs of around AED 4,000 to 6,000, and renewals at premium-zone levels. The situational ones: license amendments, attestation, and agent fees where a consultant runs the process, always quoted separately. One route worth asking about at quotation: DMCC offers a dual-licensing arrangement with Dubai's DET that allows direct mainland trading, one of the few free zone setups where mainland access is a product rather than a workaround.

For license renewal mechanics and timelines in Dubai generally, our trade license renewal guide covers the process.

Is DMCC Worth It?

The question the official site will never answer, so here is the independent version.

The premium is worth paying when the premium is the product. Three profiles clear that bar. Trading and commodities businesses, for whom the ecosystem, the exchanges and the counterparty density are operational infrastructure, not decoration. Businesses for whom banking is the constraint: DMCC standing with UAE banks is the strongest in the free zone market, with formal banking arrangements and an onboarding reputation no affordable zone matches, and for companies that have felt banking friction elsewhere, that alone can justify the price. And crypto and web3 firms, for whom the Crypto Centre is one of the only credible institutional homes in the region.

The premium is wasted when nobody you deal with checks. A solo consultant invoicing overseas clients pays roughly five times the affordable-zone price for a brand their customers will never look up, plus a share capital requirement and an audit obligation those zones do not impose. If that is your profile, a zone like Meydan gives you the Dubai address at a fraction of the cost, and the honest arithmetic favours it.

The test, as always on this site, is to name the specific counterparty for whom the DMCC name changes an outcome: a bank, a trade partner, an enterprise client, a regulator. If you can name them, DMCC is likely the correct spend. If you cannot, it is prestige without an audience.

DMCC or Meydan? The Dubai Arbitrage

Both give you a genuine Dubai license and address, and they sit at opposite ends of the Dubai price range, so the choice is really about what the address needs to do. Choose Meydan if the Dubai address itself is the requirement: it delivers one at one of the emirate's most accessible price points, digitally and fast; our Meydan guide covers it in full. Choose DMCC if you need what sits behind the address: the banking standing, the trading and crypto ecosystems, the physical JLT district, and the brand that international counterparties recognise. For the full cost picture across every UAE zone, affordable tiers included, see our free zone comparison.

Who DMCC Is For

The natural fits follow from the ecosystems: commodities and general trading companies (the founding profile), businesses where banking strength decides outcomes, crypto and web3 firms in the Crypto Centre, established SMEs and international subsidiaries that want a recognised Dubai base with real offices, and companies whose clients, partners or regulators genuinely read company registrations.

It is the wrong optimisation for cost-driven solo founders and early bootstrapped startups, for whom the share capital, the workspace mandate and the audit are pure overhead, and for industrial businesses needing warehousing at scale, which is RAKEZ's lane. DMCC does not compete on price, and choosing it on price is the one reliable way to regret it.

License Types and Activities

DMCC licenses span one of the larger activity lists in the UAE, reported at over 900 approved activities across four broad families: Trading (from general trading to the commodity verticals the zone was built on), Service (consultancy, professional and corporate services), Industrial (light activities) and the crypto and web3 activities licensed through the DMCC crypto license framework. Multiple related activities can be combined on one license, subject to DMCC's approval and, for regulated and crypto activities, its enhanced due diligence. For how license types work across the UAE generally, including the mainland DET system, see our Dubai trade license guide.

What You Get: Ownership, Tax and Banking

The UAE free zone fundamentals apply: 100% foreign ownership, full repatriation, no personal income tax, and at company level the free zone corporate tax regime, where qualifying income can benefit from the 0% rate under the Qualifying Free Zone Person rules, with the standard 9% otherwise; our UAE free zone corporate tax guide covers what qualifies. DMCC's mandatory audit dovetails with the tax regime: audited accounts are part of maintaining a clean QFZP position, so the compliance obligation and the tax benefit are two sides of the same discipline.

On banking, DMCC is the exception to the paragraph we write for every other zone. Its standing with UAE banks is the strongest in the free zone market, with formal banking partnerships and an onboarding reputation that is itself a reason companies choose the zone. That does not make KYC disappear: due diligence at DMCC is real, at application and at the bank. What it changes is the default posture: a clean DMCC file opens doors that the same file from a budget zone has to push. For opening a UAE business account in general, our UAE business banking guide covers the banks and the process.

Facilities: JLT, Uptown Dubai and the Workspace Mandate

DMCC is a district before it is a license. Member companies sit in the JLT towers around the lakes, and increasingly in Uptown Dubai, the zone's newer development. The workspace rules follow from that physicality: every DMCC company must hold a workspace in the free zone, from a flexi-desk (reported at AED 16,000 to 19,000 per year where not bundled) through serviced offices to full floors, with visa quotas scaling to the space. For a business that will actually work, meet and host in Dubai, this is infrastructure you use; for a business that only needs an address, it is the clearest signal that DMCC is the wrong zone, and that signal is worth heeding before you pay for it.

Setting Up in DMCC, Step by Step

  1. 1
Choose your activity, package and workspace

Confirm your activities against the approved list (900+ reported), pick the package, and verify in writing whether the workspace is included; decide the visa count.

    Day 1
  2. 2
    Apply through the DMCC portal

Passport copies, professional background and activity details for all shareholders; DMCC runs genuine KYC and background checks at this stage.

    Days
  3. 3
Receive approvals and sign the lease

Initial approval, then the workspace lease (flexi-desk at minimum), then license issuance; days to around four weeks depending on the file.

    Up to 4 weeks
  4. 4
Deposit the share capital if required

Where your activity requires it, the share capital (around AED 50,000 or AED 10,000 per shareholder) goes into the company account within about three weeks of registration; the funds are then usable for the business.

    Weeks
  5. 5
Open the bank account and process visas

Banking is the bottleneck (commonly 2 to 4 weeks, sometimes more); run it in parallel with the establishment card, medicals and Emirates ID. DMCC's banking arrangements help, but prepare the file as if they did not.

DMCC: Strengths and Trade-Offs

The honest balance for a founder weighing DMCC

Pros
  • The strongest free zone brand in the UAE: fDi Intelligence Global Free Zone of the Year for roughly a decade running
  • The best banking standing in the free zone market, with formal bank partnerships
  • Real ecosystems: commodities infrastructure and the Crypto Centre, plus 26,000+ member companies
  • A physical JLT and Uptown Dubai district with genuine offices, not just registered addresses
  • A dual-licensing route to mainland trading through Dubai's DET
Cons
  • Premium pricing: official packages from ~AED 31,936 and realistic first years of AED 45,000 to 60,000, roughly 5 times the affordable zones
  • Share capital typically around AED 50,000 where required (refundable, but real cash flow at setup)
  • Mandatory workspace in JLT, excluded from some packages at AED 16,000 to 19,000 per year
  • Mandatory annual audit adds recurring compliance cost
  • Due diligence and banking make the true setup timeline 1 to 2 months, not days

Common Mistakes When Setting Up in DMCC

Five failure modes come up repeatedly with DMCC setups, and they are all avoidable:

  • Budgeting the package price, not the all-in. The official package is a fraction of year one: workspace (if excluded), visas, audit and any required share capital belong in the plan from day one. Realistic first years run AED 45,000 to 60,000.
  • Treating the share capital as a fee. Where it applies, it is not lost money: it is refundable and usable for expenses. But founders who discover the requirement after licensing scramble for cash they should have reserved at decision time. Confirm whether your activity requires proof of deposit.
  • Buying prestige without an audience. If no bank, client or partner of yours will ever weigh the DMCC name, the premium buys nothing a Meydan license would not. Name the counterparty before you pay for the brand.
  • Forgetting the audit. DMCC requires audited accounts every year. Budget the auditor and keep the books clean from month one, not at year end.
  • Assuming banking is automatic. DMCC improves the odds more than any other zone; it does not remove KYC. Prepare the business plan and source-of-funds file as rigorously as anywhere, and start the bank conversation during setup, not after.
