What is Airwallex?
Airwallex is a global payments and financial platform built for businesses that operate across borders. It is not a bank: it holds payment and e-money licenses in the markets where it operates, and client money is safeguarded rather than deposit-insured. For the full framework on how a payment institution differs from a bank, see our guide to the best digital banks for international businesses.
The Business Account is organized around four building blocks:
- Business Account (Global Accounts). Multi-currency accounts with local account details, so you can receive funds like-for-like. Being paid in USD into a USD balance, for example, avoids the double conversion traditional accounts often force on incoming foreign currency.
- Cards. Multi-currency corporate cards you can spend from your existing currency balances, with no international transaction fee when you pay from a matching currency balance. Spend in a currency you do not hold and the amount auto-converts at the account FX markup.
- Spend Management. Per-card limits, instant card freezing, receipt capture with OCR, and direct integrations with Xero, QuickBooks and NetSuite.
- Payments (acceptance). Card acquiring and local payment methods for merchants, priced separately from the account itself (see the fees section for an important distinction).
The platform routes transfers over local payment rails in 120+ countries, which is what allows free transfers in most corridors instead of SWIFT fees on every payment.
